"For me, the marvelous thing about what I see happening here is that, what we have, as far as I’m concerned, is we have a community already. We’re just trying to figure out how to actually find a place for that community to live. And that has happened, in my mind, over the last 12 months, as we’ve been going through all these other things.

"We’ve had other crises in the past. And I think our response to this one is very telling, because we’re behaving as though the given is the community. We’ve got the community, and the variable is how do we figure out how to build the place for the community to live. And that just lightens up my heart – there’s this group of people who wants to live together so badly that we’re going through this stuff to figure out how to make it happen." ~ Russ

In the Garden

While Mark's in his Adirondack chair, I'm sitting with my sketch pad on a bench in the garden east of the enclosed garden. Here there are winding paths that crisscross each other to create beds for plants that don't tend to need protection from deer. In this particular spot I feel like a special guest of the asparagus growing up behind and on each side of the bench.

I can hear the chatter of the children who love to play here. In places it's a little like a maze. In others there are bushes that provide perfect forts beneath. There are places to meet and to hide and always wonders and beauties to discover. This morning, though, the first attraction is the raspberries which beg to be savored.

From my bench, I gaze at the abundance of life, color, and texture. My attention is caught by the movement of a bird in one of the nut trees. I am filled with the sense of how I am a part of all I see and how we are all held in the love of Mama Gaia.

  1. And I get up from my Adirondack chair, stroll over to where you are in the garden, and let you know that our neighbors are joining us for lunch in an hour. We look forward to jointly preparing a scrumptious feast. Before I return to my chair, though, I savor the wonderful scents wafting around the garden.

  2. I love seeing you both relaxing next door! When Russ takes his homemade bread out of the oven, we'll bring some over to sample...It goes great with nature watching :D
